The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
